Many of these projects are currently in various states of hibernation or hiatus as we wait for the pandemic to fully resolve.
Atkins-Kern-Olsen Trio
The Atkins-Kern-Olsen trio consists of guitar, keys and bass playing a mix of jazz and pop standards, along with some free-form improvisations, especially suitable for booking in restaurants. Ben Atkins on guitar and Warren Olsen on bass rounds out the trio.
Piper Road
Fronted by talented singer Maria Frattura, Piper Road plays a mix of sophisticated pop and rock, including plays covers by artists such as Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald, among others.
Impulse
Impulse is a five-piece jazz-funk outfit playing a repertoire that includes compositions from the likes of Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, Miles Davis, David Sanborn, Wayne Shorter, and George Benson, as well as a few originals.
A5 (Cheredovanie)
Led by Russian singer-songwriter Nastya Alekseyeva, this five piece outfit plays original songs written by Alekseyeva, and has opened for national Russian touring acts, including the likes of the Boris Grebenshchikov, the “Bob Dylan” of Russia.
Sweet Rasa
Sweet Rasa is the “house band” for the Deborah Abel Dance Company.Directed by Abel's husband, Lee Perlman, the group includes a rotating cast of performers, and generally plays original music composed by Perlman.
Piano and Percussion
Kern often plays solo gigs accompanied by a percussionist, either Steve Sherman on the tabla or Chris Tosti on drums. These gigs primarily feature groove-based improvisations.
New Bay Colony
New Bay Colony is a southern and classic rock band that originated in 1973 and toured up and down the East Coast for years. The band was revived many years later after the boys had grown their families and worked their jobs. Kern occasionally substitutes with the band.
Improvelicty
Improvelocity was a group improvisational ensemble under the leadership of Soprano Andrea Loretz-Frey. The group included two or more singers, percussionists, a horn player, a cellist, and other instrumentation.
